GTA 6 Wanted System Explained: Star States, Heat Icons And How You Actually Escape

If you paused the Extended Look during the store robbery, you saw them. Five small red icons sitting under the wanted stars. A camera. Two heads. A clothes hanger. A single head. A gun. They flash past in seconds, and they are the most important interface change in the history of this series.

Rockstar has now explained the system in press briefings, and the short version is this. The stars tell you how hard the police are coming. The icons tell you why they can find you. And escaping means taking their information away, piece by piece.

It starts with a witness

The wanted system no longer fires just because a crime happened. Rockstar design director Rob Nelson told IGN that a crime must be witnessed, or an alarm must be triggered, before the law hears about it at all. No witness, no report, no stars. That alone reshapes how every job begins.

The stars have states

Look closely at the star row in the reveal and you will see it is not simply on or off. Hollow stars mean a crime has been reported but the police have not identified who did it. Filled stars mean an active pursuit. Red stars mean you have lost the officers chasing you but you are still inside the active heat zone, the area where the search continues, and returning to that area brings the heat straight back. At six stars, the heat zone is reported to be the entire map. Our frame from 12:08, taken during the store shootout, shows mixed hollow and filled stars in a single row, the system working live.

The five heat icons

  • The camera means you have been spotted on CCTV, the police have footage
  • The two heads mean the police know they are looking for a couple working together
  • The clothes hanger means the police know what you are wearing
  • The single head means the police know your identity and physical description
  • The gun means the police know which weapon you used

Each icon is an evidence vector, and each one has a counter. Nelson gave IGN the worked example himself. Put on glasses and a baseball cap and the police still know your clothes, so you need a clothing store, or a personal vehicle with a change of outfit in the boot. Change your hair and your appearance shifts, but the outfit problem remains. And if the couple icon is lit, the police are looking for a pair, so splitting up from your partner makes you both harder to find.

The reveal demonstrates every counter

Once you know the system, the Extended Look plays like a tutorial. The icons burn bright through the Good Mart job from 11:46. At 15:43 the pair idle calmly past a parked cruiser with stars still lit, because pursuit and identification are different problems. At 15:50 they swap vehicles inside a parking structure. At 16:42 Raul splits from the group with the holdall. And at 16:48 they walk out of the van in completely different clothes, Lucia in a Baddie hoodie, which is the hanger icon being switched off in real time. Swap, split, change. The whole evasion sequence is the heat system being dismantled vector by vector.

Why this matters

Every previous game in this series treated escape as geometry, break line of sight and wait. This treats escape as information management. The police are not psychic any more, they know what a witness saw, what a camera recorded, what description exists, and nothing else. That is a stealth game grammar welded onto an open world, and it explains half the systems we have documented elsewhere, from the on screen outfit changes to the detection meter that appears indoors during the raid.
