GTA 6 Combat Decoded: Hit Markers, The Eye Meter And A Reticle That Thinks

The beret raider fires through the doorway with red and yellow hit markers on his bodyImage: Rockstar Games

At 25:21 in the Extended Look, Jason exchanges fire with a raider in a red beret, and the hits register in a way this series has never shown before. Not a floating cross at the crosshair. Paint, on the body, where the rounds land.

Red means dead, yellow means winged

Watch the exchange at quarter speed and the system reads clearly. A red splat blooms on the raiders chest, the shot that would kill. Yellow splats sit on his gun hand and thigh, hits that disable without ending him. Damage in GTA 6 is located and colour coded by consequence, which means non lethal play is not a mode you select. It is readable on every enemy, shot by shot. Wing the gun hand and you have taken his aim. Hit the leg and you have taken his movement. The body is the interface.

The eye under your health

In the same frames a second bar runs under the health readout, marked with an eye. It is a detection meter, and the reveal shows why it exists. At 23:38 Jason and a coverall raider aim at each other across a renovation floor in near darkness, one work lamp between them, blue tape on the boards. Light, noise and sightlines matter enough to earn a permanent gauge. The last game had a stealth stance. This is stealth as a system, live even in a firefight.

Two reticles, two jobs

On vehicles the reticle is a minimal ring, visible at 14:17 sitting on a cruisers grille while sparks land exactly where it points. On people it grows into a triple ring that pulses and fills as aim is held, which the reveal turns into its best dramatic beat at 25:26, the shot Jason lines up on a raider pinning a woman and never takes, because the game will not offer a clean solution while she is underneath. Aim time is a resource, and the reticle is its meter.

The rest of the frame

  • Ammo reads as a magazine and reserve pair, 28 and 48 on the carbine in the beret fight
  • The weapon silhouette beside it swaps to match whatever is equipped, carbine, pistol, carbine again across the raid
  • Wanted stars carry their own states, with the five heat icons beneath them, covered in full in our wanted system explainer
  • Melee runs from a bare knuckle yard brawl at 9:24 to a ground finisher at 25:25, and the fight the finisher belongs to ends with an unarmed reversal

Add it together and combat in GTA 6 is built to be read. Where you hit matters, being seen matters, holding your aim matters. None of this was announced in a press release. All of it is on screen, at the timestamps above, if you go frame by frame. We did.
