From zero: the new player money guide for GTA Online
Image: Rockstar GamesStarting GTA Online in 2026 means arriving thirteen years late to an economy with seven hundred vehicles, thirty-odd properties and a map full of icons that each cost millions. The good news: the path from broke to self-funding has never been shorter, because Rockstar has quietly stacked the early game with free money, and most new players simply never find it. This guide is that path, in order, with every figure verified against the current game.
Everything below runs solo, and every business or heist mentioned has its own full guide on this desk when you are ready to go deeper.
Step 1: spend the Career Builder properly
- On PS5, Xbox Series and PC Enhanced, every new account gets the Career Builder: GTA$4,000,000, once, to spend across a criminal career of your choice, a property, vehicles and weapons
- You must spend at least GTA$3 million of it before playing, and you can carry up to GTA$1 million out as cash, so the goal is simple: leave with an income-generating property and a million in the bank, not a wardrobe
- The desk pick: Gunrunner, taking the Chumash Bunker, because it earns on its own, feeds the Nightclub you will buy later, and leaves the million intact. Executive with the CEO office is the respectable alternative
- Older-generation player without the Builder? Skip straight to Step 2, the free chain below works identically and funds the same road
Step 2: run the free chain, worth over GTA$2 million
- First Dose: six story missions from Ron and Dax that pay around GTA$600,000 for playing them, hand you the Freakshop and the Acid Lab lorry free, and award the Ocelot Virtue, an electric supercar worth over GTA$2 million, also free. The single highest-value thing a new player can do
- The Cluckin Bell Farm Raid: a full six-mission robbery with zero buy-in, paying GTA$500,000 for the finale as host plus a GTA$250,000 one-time award, and it teaches you how the bigger heists think
- The free garage: check your entitlements for the Duke O Death, claim the Elegy RH8, and once you register as a CEO the Buzzard attack helicopter spawns on request for nothing
Step 3: light the Acid engine
- Run Fooligan jobs for Dax until the equipment upgrade unlocks, then pay the GTA$750,000, the only real cost in your early game
- From then on the lab produces in the background and sells GTA$335,200 a batch with one delivery vehicle, over GTA$100,000 an hour self-supplied
- This is your floor: it pays for everything else in this guide while you play the game
Step 4: protect the money
- Play in invite-only sessions: every business and sell mission on this desk works there, and the lobby griefers simply never existed
- Do not buy a supercar yet. You already own a free one. The classic new-player mistake is turning the first million into a garage ornament
- Buy snacks and armour every time you pass a shop, the habit that separates players who finish missions from players who restart them
- Two purchases the whole community agrees you skip: Document Forgery, and panic-bought Shark Cards, because the free chain above out-earns both
- Check the game every Thursday: the weekly reset rotates 2x and 3x bonuses, and the entire modern economy is built around it
Step 5: the Kosatka moment
- Everything so far exists to reach this: the Kosatka submarine, GTA$2,200,000, which unlocks the Cayo Perico Heist, the best solo money in GTA Online
- Your first run carries the story target at around GTA$1.1 million, and repeats gross GTA$600,000 to 680,000 solo in under an hour once you learn the island
- Add the Sparrow helicopter, around GTA$1.8 million, as the very next purchase, it turns Cayo preps from evenings into minutes
- From a fresh current-gen account, the free chain plus a few Acid batches puts the Kosatka in reach inside the first week
Step 6: from funded to stacked
- With Cayo and the Acid Lab running, follow the build order from our business comparison: the Agency or Auto Shop for on-demand income, then the Bunker and the MC core three, then the Nightclub to make it all pay twice
- Learn the Thursday circuit from our heists comparison, the weekly first-completion boosts that turned the endgame into an appointment calendar
- Every step of that ladder has a full guide on this desk, and by the time you need them, this page will have paid for all of it
The reference layer: the first-week ledger
Add it up honestly. A current-gen account leaves the Career Builder with an earning property and about GTA$1 million cash. First Dose adds roughly GTA$600,000 plus a GTA$2 million car and a free business. Cluckin Bell adds GTA$750,000 with its award. A handful of Acid batches add GTA$335,200 each. That is the Kosatka funded inside week one without buying a thing, and on older versions without the Builder, the identical chain gets there in a committed week or two. The players who struggle in GTA Online are not short of money, they are short of this order.
