Drift Tuning and Drift Races: the complete LS Car Meet guide

Drift Racing is one of the few things in GTA Online that rewards actual driving skill rather than a better car, and Rockstar keeps feeding it: new tracks, new eligible vehicles and boosted payouts turn up in the weekly rotation constantly. It is also the part of the game most people bounce off, because Drift Tuning fundamentally changes how a car handles and nobody explains that anywhere.

What Drift Tuning actually does

Drift Tuning is an upgrade installed at the LS Car Meet mod shop. It is not cosmetic. It alters the handling model of the vehicle so the rear end breaks traction far more readily, which is what lets you hold a slide through a corner instead of gripping round it.

Two things people get wrong. First, it applies in Freemode as well as in Drift Races, so a drift-tuned car is a worse choice for normal driving and much worse for a standard circuit race. Second, it is toggleable at the mod shop, so you are not permanently ruining a vehicle. Turn it on for drift nights, turn it off when you want to actually get somewhere.

Which cars can take it

Eligibility is a specific list, not a category. Rockstar has been adding to it in batches, usually two to four cars at a time during a drift-themed event week, and the list now runs well past the original handful.

Recent additions have included the Annis Elegy Retro, Invetero Coquette and Vapid Dominator GTT, alongside earlier eligible cars like the Dinka Jester Classic, Karin Futo, RUNE Cheburek, Vapid Dominator FX and Dinka Chavos V6. If you are unsure whether something on your list qualifies, take it to the LS Car Meet mod shop and look for the Drift Tuning option. If it is not there, it is not eligible.

Advice for a first buy: pick a rear wheel drive car you already like the feel of and that sits in the cheaper end of the eligible list. The Futo and the Cheburek are both forgiving and both get discounted regularly. There is no reason to spend seven figures to learn.

How Drift Races are scored

You are not racing the clock in the normal sense. Points accumulate for holding a slide, and the two things that build them are angle and duration. A long, controlled, shallow slide through a whole corner scores far better than a violent snap that you immediately correct.

Straightening up resets your combo. That is the single most important mechanic in the format, and it is why the best players look like they are barely doing anything dramatic. They are just never fully straight.

Getting the technique right

  • Initiate before the corner, not in it. Flick the wheel and get the back out on the approach.
  • Use the throttle to steer once you are sideways. More throttle pushes the back out further, easing off brings it back in line. Steering input is for holding the angle, not for turning.
  • Do not touch the handbrake mid-slide. It is for initiating and for emergencies. Using it to correct will kill your combo.
  • Aim for the widest line you can hold. Clipping the inside of a corner tightly is a grip racing instinct and it will cost you points here.
  • Link corners. If two bends come close together, stay sideways through the connection rather than resetting between them.

Where the money is

Base Drift Race payouts are modest. What makes them worth running is the multiplier weeks, and Rockstar leans on them hard. It is common to see 2X on Drift Races all week with a much larger weekend spike on selected races, and a weekly challenge tied to simply taking part in three of them for a flat six-figure bonus.

That challenge is the real value. Three drift races is a few minutes of work whether you win or lose, and the reward does not care where you finish. If you do nothing else with the format, do that every week it is available.

Drift Races also pay LS Car Meet Rep, which is what unlocks the Prize Ride, the test track vehicles and the cosmetic tiers. If you are chasing Rep, drift weeks are the fastest route to it.

Transform Races, briefly

They frequently share event weeks with drifting so it is worth knowing the difference. Transform Races swap your vehicle mid-race, often between land, sea and air. Known Unknowns tell you what is coming. Unknown Unknowns do not.

They require nothing from your garage, which makes them the easiest bonus money in the game during a racing week. If a multiplier is live on Transform Races and you own no eligible drift car, run those instead and do not feel bad about it.

The honest summary

Drifting will not be your main income. It is the best value-per-effort activity in GTA Online for two specific things: the weekly challenge bonus, and LS Car Meet Rep. Own one cheap eligible car, toggle the tuning on when a drift week lands, clear the challenge, and turn it back off.

Eligible vehicle lists, race rotations and multipliers change every Thursday. Check the current week before buying anything.
